Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit Feni on September 17 to inaugurate the permanent embankment construction project on the Muhuri, Kahua and Silonia rivers.

Water Resources Minister Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee told journalists about the planned visit on August 25 while inspecting the “Muhuri-Kahua Flood Control, Drainage and Irrigation Project in Parshuram, Feni (Phase I)” in Parshuram.

The Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) began preparations and preliminary work from Monday morning ahead of the prime minister’s visit.

After the inspection, the water resources minister said the area suffered extensive loss of life and property in the devastating floods of 2024 and was severely affected after flood-control embankments were opened by neighbouring India.

He also said the prime minister had approved a mega project worth BDT 15.42 billion in response to the longstanding demand of local people for permanent flood control in the region, which will play a major role in protecting croplands and homes from being washed away by river erosion every year.

The BDT 15.42 billion project will involve construction of a 67-kilometre flood-control embankment, re-excavation of 83.50 kilometres of rivers and water bodies, riverbank protection and renovation of irrigation infrastructure, according to BWDB sources. The project received final approval at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on June 16.
