Canadian High Commissioner to Dhaka, Ajit Singh, paid a courtesy call on Agriculture Minister Mohammed Aminur Rashid. The meeting was held on Monday at the Agriculture Ministry’s office at the Secretariat.
During the meeting, both sides discussed expanding cooperation in the agriculture and livestock sectors between the two countries. At the outset, the minister welcomed the high commissioner.
The minister said that Canada is a long-standing friend of Bangladesh and that bilateral trade relations are strong. Bangladesh regularly imports fertilisers from Canada. There is a need to further enhance technical cooperation and advisory support in the country’s agriculture and livestock sectors, he also noted.
He stated that Bangladesh has strong potential in organic agriculture, and plans have been taken to promote export-oriented agricultural production in char areas.
He shared that the government would provide full support if Canadian private companies wish to collaborate with local partners in these sectors.
The high commissioner said that Canada has a highly developed agricultural sector with large-scale production of agricultural commodities. His country is interested in exporting canola, an oilseed crop, to Bangladesh, he mentioned.
Canada is keen to work closely with Bangladesh in areas such as agricultural technology, research, technical cooperation, and livestock development, he further stated.
