The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Tuesday sentenced Obaidul Quader, general secretary of the Awami League (its activities are now banned), and six others to death over allegations of crimes against humanity committed during the 2024 July uprising.

The three-member panel, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, delivered the verdict at noon. The other members were judges Md Monjurul Basid and Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.

The tribunal chairman read out a summary of the 557-page verdict. The court sentenced all seven fugitives in the case to death and life imprisonment.

Those sentenced with Quader were AFM Bahauddin Nasim, the party's joint general secretary; Mohammad Ali Arafat, a former state minister for information and broadcasting; Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, chairman of the Jubo League; Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, its general secretary; Saddam Hossain, central president of the Chhatra League; and Sheikh Wali Asif Inan, its general secretary.

The verdict also ordered the confiscation of 50 percent of all movable and immovable assets belonging to Obaidul Quader, Nasim, Arafat, Parash and Nikhil. It also ordered that proceeds from the sale of the confiscated assets be used to compensate those killed or injured in the July 2024 movement, or their families, through the July Foundation or another statutory body.

It was the seventh verdict in cases involving crimes against humanity during the uprising.

The Awami League government fell on August 5, 2024 amid a student-led uprising and then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India. The reconstituted tribunal subsequently began trying cases over allegations of crimes against humanity during the uprising.

Across seven verdicts by two tribunals, 68 defendants have been sentenced. Twenty-two have received death sentences, including Hasina, Quader and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan. Eighteen of the 22 are at large; four are in custody.

Hasina was sentenced to death on November 17, 2025 on charges of crimes against humanity. The verdict against Quader and the six others came nearly 10 months later.
