Floods claim 54 lives across seven districts

In the devastating floods caused by recent heavy rainfall, mountain runoff and landslides in the country, 54 people have died so far, and another 39 have been injured. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief disclosed this information in the latest updated report on Monday.

Seven districts in the country are currently facing flood conditions, according to the report. These flood-affected districts are Khagrachari, Rangamati, Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, Moulvibazar and Habiganj. Due to this natural disaster, a total of 59 upazilas in these districts have been submerged. 334 unions and 12 municipalities in the affected regions have also suffered flood damage.

Based on the information received from the ministry, a total of 155,311 families in the country are currently living in waterlogged areas. Altogether, the number of people affected by the floods and mountain runoff in these seven districts stands at 609,411. As a result of this disaster, 54 people have lost their lives in various parts of the country so far, and another 39 people have been injured.

District-wise statistics of the casualties show that among the 54 deceased, the highest number of deaths occurred in Cox’s Bazar district, where 31 people died. 13 people also died in Chittagong, 6 in Bandarban, 3 in Rangamati and 1 in Moulvibazar. On the other hand, among the 39 injured, 24 are in Cox’s Bazar, 12 in Chittagong, 2 in Bandarban and 1 in Khagrachari.

To provide emergency shelter for the flood-affected and distressed people, a total of 1,042 government shelter centres have been opened. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has reported that 38,422 vulnerable people have already taken refuge in these centres.
