Excise duty exemption limit on Bank balances raised to BDT 400,000

A new provision has also been proposed to deduct excise duty only once per year for a single loan account.

A proposal has been made in the FY 2026–27 budget to increase tax relief on bank deposits and withdrawals. The threshold for excise duty exemption on bank account balances has been raised from the existing BDT 300,000 to BDT 400,000, according to the proposed budget. A new provision has also been proposed to deduct excise duty only once per year for a single loan account.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury made the announcement while presenting the budget in Parliament on Thursday. Currently, bank balances up to BDT 300,000 are exempt from excise duty, he said. The exemption limit has been proposed to be set at BDT 400,000 to provide relief to small depositors.

The decision is expected to encourage more people to keep money in the banking system and further motivate small savers to deposit their funds in banks.
