Newborn among three found dead in Ashulia

Police recovered the half-decomposed bodies from a locked room in a rental building

Officers suspect homicide after finding a towel wrapped around the man’s neck, but the cause of death has not been established.

Police recovered the half-decomposed bodies of an unidentified woman, a man and a newborn from a locked room in Savar’s Ashulia in the early hours of Saturday. The deaths are believed to have occurred one or two days earlier. The bodies had swollen in the heat, and the smell emanating from the room alerted neighbours.

The discovery was made around 1:30 am in a room on the second floor of a four-storey rental building in the Moddho Jamgara area.

Police suspect homicide because a towel was found wrapped around the man's neck. Police have not yet disclosed the identities of the dead or the actual cause of death.

Locals said the three had rented the room some days ago, with the man and woman presenting themselves as husband and wife. The door and windows were almost always kept shut. On Friday night, the stench from the room drew attention, and residents alerted police.

Officers from Ashulia police station opened the room and recovered the bodies. A forensic team from the Criminal Investigation Department later collected evidence from the scene, with members of Dhaka North intelligence police and Ashulia police present.

Tariqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Ashulia police station, said the bodies were recovered and sent to the morgue at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital for post-mortem examination, with further legal proceedings underway.
