Randeep Sarai, Canada’s secretary of state for international development, is visiting Bangladesh from October 11 to 14 to advance bilateral relations through stronger economic cooperation and strategic partnerships.
Sarai is expected to meet government officials, development partners and private sector representatives, and visit Canadian-supported initiatives in Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar. The visit will highlight how Canada’s international assistance helps strengthen institutions, develop skills and expand opportunities for women and youth.
Canada has provided more than CAD 6.3 billion in official development assistance to Bangladesh since 1971, including support for Bangladesh-based NGOs BRAC and icddr,b, which have since become respected global leaders. Bilateral trade reached over CAD 4 billion in 2025.
Canada says continued governance, regulatory and economic reforms can increase transparency and predictability, build investor confidence and create opportunities for mutual prosperity and inclusive growth.
In Cox’s Bazar, Sarai will hear from Rohingya refugees, host communities and partners responding to the crisis. Canada has been a top donor to the Rohingya crisis response since 2017, providing more than CAD 600 million for Rohingya refugees and host community. Canada remains committed to humanitarian support and to working with Bangladesh towards shared prosperity, inclusive growth and regional stability.
Canada’s partnership also supports health, education, gender equality and climate resilience as Bangladesh navigates its economic transition.
