Dhaka South City Corporation on Sunday deployed ward-level emergency response teams from dawn after the heaviest rainfall recorded so far this month caused waterlogging across parts of the capital, the city authority said.
Bangladesh’s meteorological department recorded 76 millimetres of rain in six hours in capital Dhaka, the highest recorded this month. Heavy precipitation was forecast to continue across Dhaka and other parts of the country throughout the day.
DSCC said it had activated two high-capacity pumps at Kamalapur and one at Dholaikhal to begin water-drainage operations. Emergency crews have been working since the early hours to keep roadside drainage outlets clear, the authority said in a press release.
A large tree uprooted and fell around 12:30 pm opposite Gate 2 of Eden Women’s College in Azimpur, blocking the road. DSCC workers cleared the debris and normal traffic resumed by 1:00 pm.
DSCC Administrator Mohammad Abdus Salam, who was present during the clearance operation, said field staff had been on the ground since dawn managing the effects of the downpour.
“The heavy rain has caused temporary waterlogging, but our workers have been in the field from the early hours to keep the situation under control,” the administrator said. “We’re making every effort to ease waterlogging and remove obstacles to keep city life normal.”
Abdus Salam appealed to residents to remain patient and join together in confronting the adverse conditions.
