IGP Baharul Alam

Police preparing nationwide list of local enforcers

He acknowledged that the police force is still recovering from the psychological toll of the recent mass uprising and is unable to function at full capacity yet.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Baharul Alam has announced that law enforcement agencies are preparing a nationwide list of individuals and groups who dominate or exert control in their local areas.

He made the statement on Saturday (July 12) while speaking to reporters after visiting the Dhaka District Police Line and the Traffic and Driving School at Mill Barracks in Old Dhaka.

“We’re currently working on compiling a list of local enforcers, especially in Dhaka,” said the IGP. “Improving overall law and order requires cooperation from political parties across the country. Their role is crucial in this process.”

He acknowledged that the police force is still recovering from the psychological toll of the recent mass uprising and is unable to function at full capacity yet.

Earlier in the day, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury told the press that delays in the judicial process are not the fault of law enforcement. “The police are not being passive,” he said. “They are more active now than before.”

Regarding the recent murder of a businessman, the Adviser clarified, “It’s the Home Ministry’s responsibility to apprehend criminals. But ensuring punishment falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Law.”
