BNP Vice Chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo has stated that, considering the country’s current situation, the next national election could take place before February, even as early as December. He also mentioned that BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia would run from Feni and win from there.
He made these remarks during an unscheduled interaction with journalists at a discussion meeting organized by the Feni District Administration on Wednesday (July 30) morning.
Abdul Awal Mintoo said, “The 2009 election was neither free, fair, nor impartial. Essentially, no elected government has existed in the country since 2006. If a nation goes without an elected government for two decades, its people’s economic condition or living standards cannot improve.”
Addressing claims about sudden election demands, he clarified, “Some say we’re abruptly calling for elections. That’s incorrect. We’ve been demanding elections since 2006. After discussions with our Acting Chairman in London, an official statement was issued. We believe the next election will be held in the first week of February, as per that statement.”
He further added during the meeting, “Governments not elected by public vote can never perform well. Therefore, we seek to restore democracy swiftly through a credible election.”
