Dr Shafiqur Rahman, ameer of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has recognised the “verdict of the people” in the 13th parliamentary elections, thanking party workers and supporters while vowing to act as a “vigilant opposition force” in the new parliament.

The leader of the 11-party alliance said in a statement on his verified Facebook account late on Friday that the alliance has nearly quadrupled its parliamentary presence to 77 seats, making it one of the strongest opposition blocs in the country’s modern political history. “That is not a setback. That is a foundation,” he wrote.

Dr Rahman acknowledged the “intimidation and harassment” faced by many supporters seeking to exercise their democratic rights, saying their courage had strengthened Bangladesh’s democracy. He recognised the disappointment of activists who campaigned relentlessly in recent months but insisted their efforts had not been in vain.

Accepting the overall election outcome, the Jamaat leader reaffirmed his party’s commitment to a “stable and functioning democratic order” and respect for the rule of law. “We recognise the overall outcome, and we respect the rule of law,” he said.

Outlining the party’s approach in parliament, Dr Rahman said it would act as a “firm, principled and peaceful opposition”, holding the government to account while contributing constructively to national progress.

The Jamaat chief added, “History reminds us that political fortunes change. In 2008, BNP was reduced to 30 seats before returning to form a government in 2026, a journey that took 18 years.”

Noting democratic politics as a long road, he added, “Our path is now clear: to earn people’s trust, ensure accountability of power and prepare responsibly for the future.”
