Prime Minister Tarique Rahman announced on Wednesday that the government will support farmers hit by heavy rains for the next three months.
He spoke in Parliament while replying to a question from treasury bench lawmaker Kalim Uddin Ahmed MP, who represents Sunamganj‑5, with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, presiding.
The lawmaker had raised the worsening plight of the haor wetlands, where relentless rainfall had submerged fields, including in Sunamganj, and left farmers struggling to harvest paddy. He appealed directly to the prime minister to stand by the growers.
In reply, Rahman said: “Three days ago, based on weather reports, I instructed local administrations in three haor districts, including Sunamganj, to prepare as the forecasts indicated and to decide what measures to take if it rained.”
The prime minister described the situation as “very painful” and added: “Even before this sitting began this morning, I spoke with the disaster management minister and informed him that heavy rain has caused problems in three haor districts and parts of Mymensingh.”
He said the government would identify farmers whose crops the heavy rain had damaged and support them for the next three months.
