Five more children showing measles symptoms have died in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, taking the total death toll since the start of the outbreak to 565, the Directorate General of Health Services said on Thursday.

No deaths from confirmed measles infection were recorded in the 24-hour period to 8 am Thursday, the directorate said in a statement.

During the same period 51 new confirmed infections were detected and another 826 children were found to have measles-like symptoms, according to the official data.

Since the outbreak began, 88 children died with confirmed measles while 477 died presenting symptoms of the disease.

8,885 children have tested positive for measles so far this year and 67,905 have shown symptoms, the directorate said. A total of 54,182 patients have been admitted to hospital, of whom 50,926 have recovered and been discharged.
