Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated Bangladesh’s newly elected president, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, describing the presidential election as a significant milestone in the country’s democratic journey.

In a letter, Muizzu said, “Bangladesh’s first contested presidential election in 35 years reflects the trust placed in the newly elected President.”

He conveyed his congratulations on behalf of the Maldives government and people.

President Muizzu noted the relationship between the two countries was founded on “strong historical ties” and a “shared commitment to regional stability and development”. He said he was confident bilateral cooperation would grow in depth and scope under Bangladesh’s new president, bringing the countries closer in the years ahead.

He also expressed hope that Bangladesh would continue its journey towards lasting peace, progress and prosperity during President Mirza Fakhrul’s tenure.

The Bangladesh High Commission in Malé thanked President Muizzu, the Maldives government and the Maldivian people for the gesture.

It said Bangladesh attached great importance to its brotherly relations with the Maldives and remained committed to deepening friendship, expanding mutually beneficial cooperation and promoting shared prosperity.
