EC issues supplementary gazette revising referendum results

Although the EC did not specify the reason behind the revision, it stated that the supplementary gazette was issued by order of the commission.

The Election Commission (EC) has revised the officially declared results of the referendum held to implement the July National Charter. A supplementary gazette, published by order of the commission, introduced changes to the vote counts for both the “Yes” and “No” sides. However, no specific reason for the revision was disclosed.

The amended figures were made public on Thursday (February 26) through a supplementary gazette signed by Akhtar Ahmed, senior secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat.

According to the EC notice, the referendum was held on February 12 to seek public consent on the “July National Charter (Constitutional Reform) Implementation Order, 2025” and proposed constitutional reforms. The initiative was described as an exercise of the sovereign will of the people, following the successful mass uprising in July–August 2024. The original results were published in gazette form on February 13.

Under the initial gazette, the number of “Yes” votes was recorded at 48,200,660, while “No” votes stood at 22,071,726. The combined total of “Yes” and “No” votes was 77,695,023. Of these, 7,422,637 ballots were declared invalid, leaving 70,272,386 valid votes.

According to the revised gazette, “Yes” votes now stand at 47,225,980 and “No” votes at 21,960,231. The total number of votes cast for both options has been adjusted to 76,621,407. Of these, 7,435,196 were invalidated, bringing the total number of valid votes to 69,186,211.

An analysis of the amended results shows that, compared with the earlier figures, “Yes” votes decreased by 974,680 and “No” votes by 111,495. Notably, while the number of valid votes declined, the number of invalid ballots increased by 12,559. Overall, the total number of votes cast fell by 1,073,616.

Although the EC did not specify the reason behind the revision, it stated that the supplementary gazette was issued by order of the commission.
