The National Parliament passed the approximately BDT 9.38 trillion national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year. The new budget will come into effect on Wednesday. The budget was approved on Tuesday with the passage of the Appropriation Bill, 2026 during a parliamentary session. Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury placed the bill before Parliament, and it was passed by voice vote under the chairmanship of Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad.
Earlier, on June 11, the finance minister had presented the proposed budget for FY 2026–27 in Parliament. On Monday, Parliament passed the Finance Bill, 2026, incorporating 64 amendments, including an increase in the tax-free income threshold and tax relief measures in several areas.
While the Finance Bill was being passed, the finance minister introduced several significant amendments to the national budget following proposals made by Prime Minister and Leader of the House, Tarique Rahman. The amendments include raising the tax-free income threshold for individual taxpayers and withdrawing provisions requiring the disclosure of Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) information and investment details in connection with the purchase of land, apartments, and the opening of bank accounts. In addition, despite the proposed budget retaining the existing 10 percent tax on private universities, the final Finance Bill reduced the rate by half to 5 percent.
The proposed 15 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on advertisements placed on online OTT platforms, social media, search engines, and online marketplaces has also been reduced to 5 percent.
The finance minister expressed hope that these measures would encourage the use of formal and legal financial channels, reduce informal overseas payments through the hundi system, and improve overall tax compliance.
