BNP lawmaker Misti resigns, seat declared vacant

The reserved-seat MP submitted her resignation after an instruction from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and the Parliament Secretariat subsequently declared the seat vacant.

Ferdousi Ahmed Misti, a BNP lawmaker holding a reserved women’s seat, submitted her resignation to the Speaker’s office on Thursday afternoon, and the National Parliament Secretariat has declared her seat vacant.

Misti was elected to the reserved seat on a BNP nomination and took the oath on May 3, leaving the post within about five months.

She submitted her resignation after an instruction from BNP chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, following looting and vandalism at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur-1, in which several BNP leaders and activists were accused of involvement, according to a BBC Bangla report.

Dhaka Metropolitan North BNP and Juba Dal, along with the Metropolitan West Chatradal committee, were dissolved the previous day. Fourteen people from the BNP, Chatradal, Swecchasebak Dal and Sramik Dal were expelled at various levels.

Misti is the wife of former councillor Saidur Rahman Newton and the sister of BNP leader Nasir Uddin Ahmed Pintu. Newton, a Mirpur thana BNP leader and then commissioner of Ward 8, was shot dead in front of Orchid Plaza in Dhanmondi on May 10, 2002. Pintu died in jail on May 3, 2015.
