Actress Azmeri Haque Badhon on Tuesday said she and her family were attacked at the Venice International Film Festival by people identifying as leaders and activists of Bangladesh’s Awami League and banned Chhatra League, and that she intends to pursue legal action over the incident.

Badhon, who was in Venice to take part in the festival, said in a video message posted on social media that Italian police had helped her reach a safe location after the incident.

“The disgusting incident that happened with me yesterday was carried out by people identifying themselves as leaders and activists of Bangladesh’s Awami League and Chhatra League,” she said. “Many people have been calling me to ask how I am, where I am. Alhamdulillah, I am fine.”

“I have never bowed my head and I haven't forgotten how to keep it high. Breaking me is not so easy,” she said. “The police here helped a lot. Last night they took me to a safe place.”

Badhon said Bangladesh’s ambassador in Italy had contacted her and that officials from the embassy were assisting her.

“I am going to the police station with them to file a case,” she said.

The actress said she had evidence of the attack and that several people had already been identified. “We have all the evidence and we have already identified many people,” she said.

Badhon also said her family had been targeted. “I am deeply upset by the way I, my brother and his family, his small child, were harassed,” she said. “Because of me, the way my younger brother, his wife and their three-year-old child were assaulted is disgusting.”

She said the Prime Minister’s Office had been in touch with her and expressed gratitude to people in Bangladesh and abroad who had supported her.

“I consider myself a proud Bangladeshi because the people of my country stood by me in my time of danger. For that, I have so much gratitude and love,” she said.

Badhon also spoke about her stance during the July uprising. “I stood beside the people of Bangladesh in the July mass uprising, which I consider one of the correct decisions of my life. I am a proud July fighter,” she said.

The actress made clear she would not leave Italy without pursuing the matter. “I am not leaving Venice for Bangladesh without filing a case. I will see this through to the end,” she said.
