Water is flowing above the danger level at four stations across three rivers in the country. At the same time, with forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next day in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, as well as in Assam, Meghalaya and West Bengal of India, short-term flood situations may worsen in several regions of the country, according to the Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre (FFWC). This information was provided in the regular bulletin of the FFWC on Monday.

Water is currently flowing above the danger level at the Fenchuganj (Sylhet) and Markuli (Sunamganj) stations of the Kushiyara River, the Chhatak (Sunamganj) station of the Surma River and the Kalmakanda (Netrokona) station of the Someshwari River, according to the bulletin. The FFWC stated that the water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may rise further over the next two days. Flash floods or short-term floods may consequently occur in some low-lying riverbank areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram.

The water level of the Surma River has increased over the last 24 hours, despite a slight decrease in the water level of the Kushiyara. But the water levels of both rivers may rise again over the next three days. The forecast mentions that within the next 24 to 48 hours, river water in some areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj may cross the danger mark again, further deteriorating the ongoing flood situation. Water levels in the Sarigoain, Jadukata, Jinjiram, Someshwari, Bhugai and Kangsha rivers are also rising. Within the next 24 to 48 hours, water from these rivers may exceed danger levels in certain areas of Sherpur, Mymensingh, Netrokona, Sylhet and Sunamganj, causing short-term floods or worsening existing flood conditions.

The water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges rivers continue to rise, while the water level of the Padma remains stable. This trend may continue for the next five days. During this period, the water of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river may touch warning levels in some places of Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur, Bogura, Sirajganj and Tangail, with fears of low-lying riverbank areas being inundated. Water levels are also rising in the Upper Karatoya, Upper Atrai, Tangon, Punarbhaba, Mahananda, Jamuneshwari, Atrai and Ghaghat rivers in the northern and north-western regions. Within the next 24 to 72 hours, the Atrai and Chhota Jamuna rivers may reach warning levels in parts of Naogaon and Natore districts, temporarily flooding low-lying areas.
