LGRD minister expects stronger World Bank support for sustainable development

The minister said World Bank support could play an important role in strengthening the capacity of the local government sector and delivering quality civic services to people’s doorsteps.

Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, LGRD and Co-operatives minister, expressed hope that the World Bank will further strengthen its support for the country’s sustainable development and improvement of people’s living standards.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Jean Pesme, World Bank country manager for Bangladesh, at the minister’s office in the Secretariat on Wednesday.

The meeting discussed the World Bank’s support for various ongoing development projects in Bangladesh, water supply and sanitation, rural development, addressing the impacts of climate change, and various issues related to the local government sector.

The local government minister said the government and development partners need to work together to make the country’s development activities more dynamic and sustainable. He said World Bank support could play an important role in strengthening the capacity of the local government sector and delivering quality civic services to people’s doorsteps.

He said various government initiatives are underway in key areas such as water supply, sanitation, rural development and addressing the impacts of climate change. Continued support from development partners is needed to make these activities more effective and sustainable.

The LGRD minister expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s longstanding support for Bangladesh’s development and hoped that the bank would continue to support the country’s key development initiatives in the future.

During the meeting, emphasis was placed on further strengthening existing co-operation between Bangladesh and the World Bank.
