Two separate fire incidents broke out at the Rohingya camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, in a single night, leaving a hospital completely burned down and several shelters damaged. No casualties were reported.

The first fire broke out around 5:00 a.m. on Friday (December 26) at a hospital located in Block D of Madhurchhara Rohingya Camp No. 4 under Rajapalong Union in Ukhiya upazila. With the combined efforts of the Fire Service and camp residents, the blaze was brought under control at around 7:30 a.m. after nearly two and a half hours. Although no one was injured, the hospital was completely destroyed, along with valuable medical equipment.

Dr. Mahamudul Hasan Siddiqui Rashed, health coordinator of OBAT, said the entire hospital was gutted in the sudden fire. “The exact cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed. This health post provides free medical services to Rohingya refugees and people from nearby local communities,” he said.

Preliminary estimates suggest that losses from the fire could exceed several million taka. Ukhiya Fire Service Station Officer Dollar Tripura said a Fire Service unit responded to the incident and conducted rescue operations. “No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire will be determined later,” he added.

Earlier, another fire broke out about four kilometres away at around 10:00 p.m. on Thursday (December 25) in Block B of the Kutupalong registered Rohingya camp, destroying five shelters.

On December 24 last year, a devastating fire at Kutupalong 1W Rohingya camp destroyed more than a thousand shelters and claimed one life. The recurrence of such sudden fires during the winter season has heightened fear and anxiety among camp residents.
