Bangladesh’s outgoing High Commissioner to India, Md Riaz Hamidullah, met Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar in New Delhi on Sunday, discussing various issues of mutual interest during the meeting.
In a post on X later, Jaishankar described the meeting as a “farewell call”, praising the Bangladeshi high commissioner’s contributions and wishing him success in all his future endeavours.
Posting photos of the meeting, Riaz Hamidullah wrote, “During my 18-month tenure as high commissioner, I tried to quietly and consistently advance Bangladesh-India relations, founded on mutual trust, dignity and shared interests.”
He also said he had sought to connect with the ties between the people of the two countries rather than follow the “conventional path” of diplomacy.
The outgoing high commissioner is set to take up his new assignment as Bangladesh’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva soon after completing around 18 months in Delhi.
He will be succeeded in Delhi by Bangladesh’s current Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, whose credentials have recently been formally approved by the Indian government.
