Parliament passes bill to abolish RAB and form SRB

The bill was passed by voice vote despite objections from the opposition.

The ‘Special Response Battalion (SRB) Act, 2026’ has been passed in Parliament, providing for the formation of a new specialised unit under the police named the ‘Special Response Battalion’ (SRB) following the abolition of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).

The bill was passed by voice vote on Thursday despite objections from the opposition.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed moved the bill during the third session of the 13th Parliament on Thursday. The session was presided over by Speaker Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram.

Earlier, opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman raised objections to various provisions of the bill and called for it not to be approved. But the bill was passed despite his objections and the opposition’s concerns.

Those concerned said the new law would establish an effective framework to enhance the capabilities of law enforcement agencies, ensure necessary training and maintain transparency in their activities.
