Manikganj’s Hazari gur wins GI status

The certification recognises a nearly 200-year tradition of jaggery production in the district

Officials say the GI tag could boost exports, expand market access and support local producers in Manikganj.

Manikganj’s traditional Hazari gur, a jaggery prized for its distinctive taste and aroma, has earned geographical indication (GI) certification. The government’s Patent, Industrial Design and Trademark Department issued the certificate on Monday.

The certificate, signed by Director General Md Jahangir Hossain, registers “Manikganj Hazari Gur” under class 30 with GI number 62 in the name of the Manikganj district administration. The registration took effect from February 20, 2024.

Produced in the Jhitka area of Harirampur sub-district, the jaggery carries a nearly two-century heritage and commands demand both in domestic markets and abroad.

Local producers and officials believe the GI tag could widen market access, strengthen export prospects, raise incomes for artisans, generate employment and support the local economy.
