By that time, Jamaat's registration as a political party had been canceled. Many in the political community referred to this new party, created by reformist leaders and activists from Jamaat, as "another wing of Jamaat."
However, the leaders of the AB Party have stated that their party's ideology is different from Jamaat's politics. They also declared that they would not form any alliance with Jamaat.
Initially, the party announced a 222-member convening committee, with AFM Solaiman Chowdhury, a former central Shura member and ex-secretary of Jamaat, as the convenor and Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan Manju, a former president of the expelled student wing of Jamaat, as the member secretary.
Mujibur Rahman Manju is currently the chairman of the AB Party. He told Bonik Barta, "Our main disagreement with Jamaat was over the reform proposal. After being expelled or leaving Jamaat, we have had no contact with them. We have said this initiative has not been connected to Jamaat from the beginning. We have clearly said that this is not a religious-based party. It is an inclusive one. Our goals, objectives, and programs have nothing to do with Jamaat. Ideologically, the AB Party and Jamaat are completely different. Because of this, Jamaat launched various propaganda against us, accusing us of being outside Islam. They even issued fatwas declaring us apostates. Therefore, from the very first day, it was clear. Any assumptions people had about us being linked with Jamaat were completely wrong."
He also said that the AB Party would not join any alliance with Jamaat and said, "Since we have our symbol, we will contest the elections on our terms. We will not join any alliance with Jamaat. However, we may form alliances with BNP, any new political party, or parties against discrimination in the upcoming elections. We will work on that."
Regarding the party's organizational strength for the elections, he said, "As a new party, we don't have strong candidates everywhere. But we have excellent candidates in about 30 constituencies. Right now, we can contest in 180 constituencies. However, there is still time for the elections, so we aim to field candidates in 300 constituencies."
In 2019, Barrister Abdur Razzaq, the then Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami, resigned from the party over the issue of Jamaat's demand for reforms and its stance on the Liberation War. Just hours after his resignation, Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan Manju, a former central Shura member of Jamaat and ex-president of Islami Chhatra Shibir, was expelled from the party. As a result, on April 27 of the same year, a new platform named "Jano Akangkhar Bangladesh" was officially launched under the leadership of Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan Manju.
After facing many challenges, this new platform announced the formation of a political party called "Amar Bangladesh Party" (AB Party) in 2020.
Speaking about his resignation from Jamaat, Barrister Abdur Razzaq, the former chief advisor of AB Party, recently told Bonik Barta, "I was in Jamaat for 33 years. My work was mainly in the legal field but also in diplomacy. I resigned in 2019 due to ideological differences with the party. The reason for my resignation was published in the newspapers."
Later, Barrister Abdur Razzak also resigned from his position as the chief advisor of the AB Party. Regarding this, he said, "I was an advisor to the AB Party. There are numerous advisors in BNP, Jamaat, and Awami League whose names people don't even know. I was not the convener or secretary of the AB Party, just an advisor, and I am no longer in that role."
On August 5, during the month of the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, the AB Party was registered with the "Eagle" symbol. According to a notification issued by the Election Commission (EC), "By the writ petition ruling and order of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, the Election Commission has registered 'Amar Bangladesh' Party as a political party under the Representation of the People Order, until further notice. The 'Eagle' symbol has been reserved for the party. The registration number is 50."
On the 11th of this month, the AB Party held its first central conference at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka. Mujibur Rahman Bhuiyan Manju was elected as the party's chairman during the conference with 1,400 votes. Lawyer Asaduzzaman Fuaad was elected unopposed as the General Secretary. They will serve for the next three years. Additionally, 21 executive committee members were also announced.
When asked about the current situation of AB Party, the party's General Secretary, lawyer Asaduzzaman Fuaad, told Bonik Barta, "AB Party has clearly stated in its declaration that it will build the politics of the new generation by keeping the Liberation War and religion above controversy. Our political goal is to transform the country into a welfare state. The foundation of this politics is to relieve citizens' suffering by addressing service and issue-based problems. The political practice we have followed in the last few years has no significant similarity with Jamaat or any other political party. We are trying to create moderate, inclusive, entirely organic politics."
During the July-August popular uprising, the AB Party played a crucial role in the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government. The party's young workers made significant contributions during that time. Many of them further increased their political activism in the public sphere, including through the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, after the uprising.
