Classes have finally resumed at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) after a five-month and 10-day break. On Tuesday morning (July 29), newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md Maksud Helali inspected various classes across departments. This resumption after a long break has brought relief to teachers, students, and guardians.

Earlier, on Monday (July 28) afternoon, the university’s new Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Helali, issued the class restart directive. Subsequently, the teachers’ association at the university suspended its ongoing movement program for three weeks.

Sources indicate the VC held multiple meetings over two days with the Teachers’ Association, faculty deans, department heads, students, law enforcement officials, and local residents. Professor Faruk Hossain, general secretary of the KUET Teachers’ Association, stated, “We’ve suspended the movement for three weeks based on the vice-chancellor’s assurances.”

Notably, on February 18, students demanded the resignations of the VC, pro-VC, and Director of Student Welfare following a terrorist attack on campus. At one point, protests escalated with a one-point demand for the VC’s removal. Amid student demonstrations, the Ministry of Education removed then-VC Professor Dr. Mohammad Mashud and Pro-VC Professor Dr. Sk Shariful Alam.

Subsequently, on May 1, after Professor Dr. Md Hazrat Ali of the Civil Engineering Department at CUET was appointed interim VC, the Teachers’ Association boycotted classes, demanding justice for the assault on a teacher. Dr. Hazrat Ali left Khulna on May 19 amid ongoing instability and resigned on May 22. Finally, on Thursday (July 24), the Ministry of Education appointed Professor Dr. Md Maksud Helali from BUET’s Mechanical Engineering Department as KUET’s new VC. Dr. Helali assumed office at the KUET administrative building on Friday evening (July 25).
