Indian border guards shot dead a Bangladeshi man near the northern frontier in Lalmonirhat early on Wednesday, officials said. The two countries’ border forces have scheduled a flag meeting to discuss the incident.
Ali Hossain, 40, died from BSF gunfire at about 1:20 am near the Dhabalguri border in Patgram upazila, commanders from the Bangladesh Border Guard’s Teesta-61 battalion said.
The victim’s wife and elder brother told local media that Hossain was trying to bring cattle from India. Thirteen other Bangladeshi herders fled with 11 cows, according to border sources. The BSF seized two cows and Hossain’s body. A BGB patrol recovered one cow from the border area.
Indian police in Mathabhanga, Cooch Behar district, now hold the body.
BGB battalion director Syed Fazle Munim said the force had sent a strong protest letter to the BSF and called for a flag meeting. “We’ve been at Dhabalguri since early morning,” he said. “The flag meeting with the BSF will take place today. Details will follow after that.”
The shooting occurred in an area patrolled by the BSF’s Satgram camp, part of India’s Cooch Behar-156 battalion, near main pillar 874’s second sub-pillar.
On Monday morning, another Bangladeshi youth, Sadat Hossain Mizan, 23, sustained serious injuries from BSF gunfire at the Dhabalsuti border in the same upazila. He is currently receiving treatment.
