The new government begins its journey under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday (February 17). He was sworn in as the 11th prime minister this afternoon, followed by the oath-taking of the newly appointed ministers and state ministers. With this, the new government under his leadership officially commenced its journey. At the same time, it marks the return of a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led government after nearly two decades.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath this afternoon at the South Plaza of the National Parliament.
Leaders from 13 countries — including China, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia, Brunei, Sri Lanka, Nepal, the Maldives, and Bhutan — were invited to attend the ceremony. Among the distinguished guests present at the South Plaza were the chief adviser of the outgoing interim government Dr Muhammad Yunus and members of the advisory council. Also in attendance were Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, the Chief Election Commissioner, justices of the Supreme Court, members of parliament, political leaders, the chiefs of the three armed forces, members of the diplomatic corps, senior journalists, and high-ranking civil and military officials.
Tarique Rahman’s wife, Zubaida Rahman, their daughter Zaima Rahman, and other family members were also present at the ceremony.
The programme began with the recitation from the Holy Quran. Tarique Rahman first took the oath as prime minister. He was followed by the swearing-in of full ministers, after which the state ministers took their oath.
