26659 fire incidents in the country in 2024, 140 dead

The nation experienced a combined total of 26,659 fire incidents in the previous year.

A total of 140 individuals lost their lives, and 341 sustained injuries. This year, an average of 73 fire incidents took place each day. The overall loss from these fires amounted to BDT 4.46 billion, whereas the Fire Service preserved assets valued at BDT 19.74 billion.

This information was disclosed in a press release by the Fire Service on Tuesday, January 28.

The Fire Service and Civil Defense report that most fires resulted from electrical issues, discarded cigarette or bidi remnants, stovetops, and gas leaks. There were 9,069 (33.98%) fires caused by electrical issues, 4,139 (15.52%) from cigarettes, and 3,056 (11.46%) from stoves.

In 2024, houses experienced the highest number of fires, reaching 7,131 (26.74%). Of these, 2,411 were located in kitchens, 4,513 in haystacks, and 1,887 in stores. There were 84 fires in slums, 85 in religious institutions, and 481 in shopping malls.

In transportation, 268 vehicles, 114 buses, 13 trains, and 3 launches caught fire. During firefighting operations, 37 Fire Service workers were injured, and 2 died. Additionally, unruly crowds vandalized 34 Fire Service vehicles and set 8 vehicles on fire.

Among the 341 injured in the fires, 237 were men, and 104 were women. Among the 140 deaths, 107 were men and 33 were women. The most casualties occurred in houses, gas cylinder explosions, and restaurants.

In 2024, the Fire Service rescued 750 dead and 156 injured people through drowning operations. They also rescued 303 animals, 50 birds, and 227 creatures.

In 2024, 147 mobile courts fined 149 organizations for BDT 25.8 million. To prevent fire accidents, 18,983 fire drills and 7,769 training programs were held, training 147,717 people.

According to the Fire Service, fire incidents can be reduced by raising awareness and strengthening safety measures.
