At least five children were killed on Wednesday when torrential rain triggered a landslide that struck a madrasah inside a Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, and about 30 more children were reported trapped inside, a fire service official said.

The landslide occurred around 2 pm at the madrasah in sub-block A/3 of camp 5 in Ukhiya. Rescue workers recovered the bodies of five children from the rubble, said Dollar Tripura, station officer of Ukhiya fire service.

Tripura said approximately 30 children were believed to be trapped inside the building, and two fire service units were conducting the rescue operation. The report was filed at 4:30 pm while the rescue effort was still underway.
