State minister calls for weighing opportunities, challenges in ties with major powers

The state minister further said Bangladesh needs a forward-looking foreign policy in response to growing geopolitical competition, changing security challenges, economic risks, technological changes, climate change and transnational threats.

Humaiun Kobir, state minister for Foreign Affairs, stressed the need to consider the distinct opportunities and challenges associated with Bangladesh’s relations with major powers, including China, India, Japan, the United States and the European Union. He also emphasised the importance of maintaining balance and clarity in relations with these countries.

He made the remarks while speaking to participants of a course at the National Defence College (NDC) in Mirpur on Monday.

The state minister said Bangladesh’s foreign policy must be principled, pragmatic and centred on national interests amid a rapidly changing global environment.

He further said Bangladesh needs a forward-looking foreign policy in response to growing geopolitical competition, changing security challenges, economic risks, technological changes, climate change and transnational threats.

He noted, “The ‘Bangladesh First’ policy does not mean isolation. Rather, it means placing Bangladesh’s interests at the centre of diplomacy, protecting sovereignty and expanding partnerships based on mutual respect and interests.”

Humaiun Kobir also stressed the importance of increasing regional connectivity, promoting greater economic integration and strengthening practical cooperation with neighbouring countries.

He also emphasised the need to protect the rights, dignity and welfare of Bangladeshi citizens living abroad.

The state minister said Bangladesh’s foreign policy must be confident but not confrontational; open but not dependent; and pragmatic without compromising the country’s national interests.
