Prime minister to visit US on September 21: State Minister

He said the prime minister will address the General Assembly and present Bangladesh’s new vision and priorities on the global stage, alongside holding several bilateral meetings with world leaders and important sideline meetings during the visit.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will leave for the United States on September 21 to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

Humaiun Kobir, state minister for Foreign Affairs, disclosed the information while speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday.

He said the prime minister will address the General Assembly and present Bangladesh’s new vision and priorities on the global stage, alongside holding several bilateral meetings with world leaders and important sideline meetings during the visit. Besides presenting Bangladesh’s vision on the global stage, various issues of national interest will also be discussed.

Asked whether the prime minister would meet or hold talks with US President Donald Trump during the visit, Humaiun Kobir said: “The prime minister’s primary purpose for going there was to address the UN General Assembly. There will certainly be some meetings on the sidelines, and these are usually decided almost at the last moment. Donald Trump has said he wants to meet the prime minister. When he goes there, you’ll be informed about whom he meets or holds talks with. Nothing will be kept secret; you’ll be informed.”

Referring to plans to hold a special sideline meeting during the visit to address the Rohingya crisis, the state minister said the Rohingya issue would receive priority in meetings with world leaders.
