The Ghorashal–Polash fertiliser plant has resumed production, ending a roughly one-month shutdown caused by a gas shortage. The facility, one of the country’s largest urea producers, had closed on March 4.

The plant regained gas connections on the evening of March 31 and restarted production, general manager (administration) Md Fakhrul Alam confirmed on Monday afternoon.

The plant, South Asia’s largest such facility, cost about BDT 155 billion to build. Authorities formally inaugurated the site on November 12, 2023. Production then began on March 11, 2024. The plant has an annual capacity of 1 million tonnes of urea. In the last fiscal year, the government had set a target of 800,000 tonnes, but the plant produced 816,000 tonnes.
