Laldia terminal foundation ceremony set for August 30: Minister

APM Terminals delegation meets shipping minister

The minister said the terminal would raise port capacity, support trade and create jobs as Bangladesh seeks to attract foreign investment in shipping.

The foundation stone of the Laldia container terminal at Chattogram port will be laid on August 30 with Danish cooperation, Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said on Thursday.

The minister said the terminal would be a modern, environmentally friendly green facility using the latest technology, with cranes operated remotely from an office to further improve efficiency and safety.

The project would also ensure active women’s participation, which Alam said would open new scope for inclusive employment in the port sector.

Alam made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation from Denmark-based APM Terminals at the shipping ministry. He said the terminal would increase Chattogram port’s capacity, create jobs, expand trade and strengthen the national economy.

The minister praised Denmark’s socio-economic development and technological advancement and sought cooperation from the Danish government and investors in modernising Bangladesh’s port infrastructure.

Bangladesh offered a favourable climate for foreign investment, with significant potential in ports and shipping, he said, and assured investors of maximum support.

APM Terminals delegates thanked the government and discussed using modern technology, management expertise and international experience in Bangladesh’s port sector, including at Laldia.
