Former minister Ramesh Chandra Sen dies in custody

The former minister was suffering from a heart condition and had been receiving treatment in jail for some time.

Ramesh Chandra Sen, a former minister and senior figure of the ousted Awami League, died on Saturday while held in a district jail. He was 83.

Sen, a former water resources minister and five-term MP, was pronounced dead by doctors at Dinajpur Medical College Hospital this morning after being taken there from Dinajpur District Jail. Hospital authorities said he was dead on arrival.

The former minister was suffering from a heart condition and had been receiving treatment in jail for some time. He was arrested in 2024 following the student-led mass uprising and had been held at Dinajpur jail since.

Sen served as a minister in an Awami League government and was a member of the party’s presidium until its activities were banned. He represented the Thakurgaon-1 constituency in parliament five times.
