Jatri Kalyan Samity reports 351 killed in road accidents during Eid rush

This year, the number of road accidents rose by 8.95 percent, fatalities by 8.26 percent, and injuries by 21.05 percent compared to the previous year.

At least 351 people were killed and 1,046 others injured in 346 road accidents across the country during the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. During the same period, 23 railway accidents claimed 35 lives and left 223 injured, while eight waterway accidents resulted in eight deaths, 19 injuries, and three people missing.

In total, 377 accidents across road, rail, and waterways combined led to 394 deaths and 1,288 injuries.

The findings were revealed in a report by the Road Accident Monitoring Cell of the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (Passenger Welfare Association), compiled from an analysis of media reports. Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, the association’s secretary general, presented the report at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) on Monday morning.

The report tracks the 15-day period from the start of the Eid journey on March 14 to the return of holidaymakers on March 28.

According to the association, 322 people were killed, and 826 were injured in 315 road accidents during last year’s Eid-ul-Fitr. This year, the number of road accidents rose by 8.95 percent, fatalities by 8.26 percent, and injuries by 21.05 percent compared to the previous year.

Motorcycles once again accounted for the highest number of casualties. There were 125 motorcycle accidents, resulting in 135 deaths and 114 injuries — representing 36.12 percent of total road accidents, 38.46 percent of fatalities, and 10.89 percent of injuries.
