Unidentified saboteurs have derailed an inter-city train and severed a major rail link after tearing up tracks in central Bangladesh. The incident has thrown services on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route into disarray, causing multiple cancellations.
The engine and two carriages of the Dhaka-bound Agnibina Express were derailed early Monday after nearly 21 feet of track were removed near Salta Mathkhola in Gafargaon, Mymensingh. Railway and police sources claim the act was likely deliberate sabotage, with an investigation now underway.
Station Superintendent Abdullah Al Harun confirmed all train movements on the route are suspended. Repair work is ongoing, and a rescue train has begun recovery operations.
Facing the closure, the Jamuna Express departed Mymensingh for Dhaka via an alternative route through Gauripur, Kishoreganj, and Bhairab. Four other inter-city services — the Agnibina Express (735 and 736), the Brahmaputra Express (744), and the Haor Express (778) — have been cancelled entirely.
Bangladesh Railway has asked passengers with tickets for these trains to log in online to claim refunds.
