Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidates won five of six parliamentary constituencies in Sylhet, according to unofficial results.

Mufti Abul Hasan, an 11-party alliance nominee and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis leader Mufti Abul Hasan won the remaining seat.

In Sylhet-1, BNP’s Khandakar Abdul Muktadir secured 176,000 votes, defeating Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Moulana Habibur Rahman. Other candidates, including nominees from Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Communist Party of Bangladesh and Gono Odhikar Parishad, together polled fewer than 6,000 votes.

Tahsina Rushdir Luna of the BNP won Sylhet-2 with 117,956 votes, beating Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis candidate Muntasir Ali, who secured 38,635.

BNP’s MA Malek took Sylhet-3 with 115,450 votes. His closest rival, Musleh Uddin Raju of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, polled 75,674.

Ariful Haque Chowdhury of the BNP secured victory in Sylhet-4, taking 186,846 votes against Jamaat-e-Islami’s Zainal Abedin on 71,391.

The sole seat won by an opposition alliance candidate was Sylhet-5, where Mufti Abul Hasan polled 79,355 votes. His nearest challenger, Ubaydullah Faruk of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, took 69,774. BNP rebel candidate Mamunur Rashid, running with a football symbol, secured 54,614.

In Sylhet-6, BNP’s Emran Ahmed Chowdhury won with 109,107 votes. Jamaat-e-Islami’s Mohammad Selim Uddin followed on 101,559.

Supporters of victorious candidates held victory processions through the city after the returning officer announced the unofficial results last night.
