The search committee tasked with forming the new Election Commission (EC) has requested nominations. Political parties, professional organizations, and even individuals can propose names. Nominations can be submitted to the Cabinet Division by November 7. Each party, organization, or individual can propose up to five names.
The search committee issued a notification on this matter yesterday (Sunday, November 3) evening. The committee members held their first meeting at the Supreme Court earlier that afternoon.
According to the press release, “In line with the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act - 2022, the search committee formed to recommend qualified candidates to the President for appointing the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners is calling for nominations.”
It stated that political parties and professional organizations may propose up to five names for the positions of Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners by 5 pm on November 7. Interested individuals can also nominate themselves.
The notification requested that proposed names and complete resumes be submitted directly to the Cabinet Division or via email ([email protected]).
Last Thursday (October 31), the interim government formed a six-member search committee to restructure the Election Commission. Senior Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury of the Appellate Division chairs the committee. The other five members include High Court Justice AKM Asaduzzaman, former PSC Chairman Professor Zinnatunnesa Tahmida Begum, retired Professor CR Abrar of Dhaka University, Comptroller and Auditor General of Bangladesh Md. Nurul Islam, and PSC Chairman Mobasser Monem.
