Ahead of the 12th parliamentary election in Bangladesh, Amnesty
International issued a 10-point charter on Thursday, calling to ensure human
rights for all in the country.
The global rights body urges all political parties
contesting the upcoming election in Bangladesh to ensure that the protection
and promotion of human rights is a core part of their plans for the country. Amnesty
International highlighted Bangladesh’s human rights obligations in accordance
with the rights guaranteed by the country’s commitment to international treaties,
including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and
the International Covenant on Economic Social and Cultural Rights (ICESR), as
well as by the constitution of Bangladesh.
The 10 points are respect and protection for freedom of expression
and media freedom, protection of the right to protest, end of impunity for enforced
disappearances and extrajudicial executions, end of impunity for custodial
deaths and torture, protection of women’s rights, protection of the rights of
religious minorities and indigenous peoples, inclusive and sustainable
responses to climate crisis, upholding corporate accountability and labor
rights, sustainable solutions to the Rohingya crisis and Abolition of the death
penalty.
The international human rights organization has also put
forward its recommendations against each of the 10 points.
